Geography Coursetaking

As part of the 2010 geography assessment, fourth-graders' school administrators were asked to indicate in what grade students in their school typically received instruction with a primary focus on geography. The percentages of students whose administrators responded in each category are below. Administrators could pick more than one category if the course was offered at multiple grades.

Grade 4
Grade 8
Grade 12

Fifty-five percent of fourth-graders had school administrators who reported that students receive instruction with a focus on geography prior to the fourth grade, while fewer students (37 percent) had school administrators who reported a focus on geography in the fourth grade.

Geography Instruction: Grade 4 percentage of students

NOTE: Totals may sum to more than 100 because students could take a geography course in more than one grade. Some apparent differences between estimates may not be statistically significant. See complete data for the following: geography instruction prior to the 4th grade, geography instruction in the 4th grade, geography instruction after the 4th grade, students do not receive instruction with a primary focus on geography.
