Classroom Context: Emphasis on Algebra

 

As part of the 2011 mathematics assessment, teachers of fourth- and eighth-graders were asked about the emphasis they placed on algebra and functions. Teachers could select that they placed little or no, moderate, or heavy emphasis on this topic.

In 2011, a lower percentage of students from lower-income families (those eligible for the National School Lunch Program) had teachers who put a heavy emphasis on algebra and functions than their peers who were not eligible.
