Classroom Context: Computer Use

As part of the 2009 mathematics assessment, fourth- and eighth-graders were asked the frequency with which they used computers for mathematics work. The full text of the question, the corresponding percentages, and scale scores of students whose teachers responded in each category are below.

How often do you use a computer for math at school?

A. Never or hardly ever
B. Once every few weeks
C. About once a week
D. Two or three time a week
E. Every day or almost every day

Grade 4
Grade 8

Fourth-graders in large city schools who reported never or hardly ever using a computer to do math at school (235) scored higher than students who reported a greater frequency of computer use.
