Greater gains in mathematics for Black and Hispanic students than for White students since 1973

Trend in NAEP mathematics average scores for 9-year-old students, by race/ethnicity

Findings

  • At age 9, White students had higher average mathematics scores than in all previous assessment years. 
  • Compared to 1973, scores for 9-year-olds in 2008 were 25 points higher for White students, 34 points higher for Black students, and 32 points higher for Hispanic students.
