Three out of the four districts that participated in the 2002 assessment posted higher overall scores in 2007

Average scores in NAEP writing for eighth-grade public school students eligible for the National School Lunch Program, by jurisdiction: 2007

Findings

  • When compared to large central city schools nationally, average scores in 2007 were higher or comparable to students eligible for the National School Lunch Program in Atlanta, Boston, Charlotte, Chicago, Houston, New York City, and San Diego, and lower in Austin, Cleveland, and Los Angeles.
