Writing is an essential means of communication, self-expression, and learning. The NAEP writing assessment measures writing skill by asking students to write essays and stories for a variety of audiences. In this way, the assessment collects important information on students' writing progress and offers a broad picture of how well our nation's students can explain, persuade, and describe.
