Test Yourself Sample Questions: Science Grade 8

The following science questions were included in the 2005 NAEP science assessment at grade 8. As in the actual assessment, some of the questions are multiple-choice, and others are constructed-response items. Although students are asked to hand-write their responses, you can type yours in the space provided.

INSTRUCTIONS: Answer the questions below, then click submit at the bottom of the page.

Question 1: There are many different kinds of human-made satellites orbiting the Earth. List three things that these satellites are used for.

Question 2: Each figure below shows a force measured in newtons pushing on a block. If there are no other forces pushing on the block, in which case is the acceleration of the block greatest?

A.

4 Newtons pushing against a 4 Kilogram block

B.

1 Newton pushing on a 4 Kilogram block

C.

4 Newtons pushing on a 1 Kilogram block

D.

1 Newton pushing on a 1 Kilogram block

Question 3: Julio wanted to know how his pulse rate changed when he ran very fast. He measured his pulse rate before he started running, while he was running, and two minutes after he stopped running. Which graph best shows how Julio's pulse rate changed?

A.

Bar graph with a y axis of Pulse Rate (beats per minute) and x axis shows three bars 1) Before Running show the lowest pulse rate, 2) During Running shows a pulse rate between lowest and highest, and 3) After Running shows the higest pulse rate.

B.

Bar graph with a y axis of Pulse Rate (beats per minute) and x axis shows three bars 1) Before Running show the highest pulse rate, 2) During Running shows a pulse rate between lowest and highest, and 3) After Running shows the lowest pulse rate.

C.

Bar graph with a y axis of Pulse Rate (beats per minute) and x axis shows three bars 1) Before Running show the highest pulse rate, 2) During Running shows the lowest pulse rate, and 3) After Running also shows the highest pulse rate.

D.

Bar graph with a y axis of Pulse Rate (beats per minute) and x axis shows three bars 1) Before Running show the lowest pulse rate, 2) During Running shows the highest pulse rate, and 3) After Running shows a pulse rate between the other two.

Question 4: On steep slopes along the sides of new roads, highway department workers often grow plants to prevent the soil from being eroded. Describe two ways that these plants keep the soil from eroding.
