Comparable to Large Central Cities, but Below the Nation

Compared with student performance in large central city schools...

  • at grade 4, students in Austin and Charlotte scored higher, on average, and students in Chicago, Cleveland, and Los Angeles had lower average scores.
  • at grade 8, students in Austin, Charlotte, and San Diego scored higher, on average, while students in Atlanta, Chicago, Cleveland, and Los Angeles had lower average scores.  

Compared with student performance in the nation...

  • at grade 4, students in all participating districts had lower average scores than the score for the nation, except for Austin, where the average score was not significantly different.
  • at grade 8, students in all participating districts had lower average scores than the score for the nation.
