Classroom Context: Discussing New Vocabulary

 

As part of the 2011 reading assessment, fourth-grade teachers were asked how often they help students understand new words. The percentage of students whose teachers responded in each category are below.

How often do you do the following things as part of reading instruction with this class? Help students understand new words

A. Never or hardly ever
B. Once or twice a month
C. Once or twice a week
D. Almost every day

Grade 4
Grade 8
Grade 12

In the fourth grade, 87 percent of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch through the National School Lunch Program received help in understanding new words almost every day. This percentage was higher than the percentage for non-eligible students (83 percent).
