Classroom Context: Emphasis on Algebra

As part of the 2011 mathematics assessment, teachers of fourth- and eighth-graders were asked about the emphasis they placed on algebra and functions. Teachers could select that they placed little or no, moderate, or heavy emphasis on this topic.

Grade 4
Grade 8

Approximately 55 percent of fourth-graders in large city schools had teachers who reported placing a heavy emphasis on algebra and functions in 2011, which is a higher percentage than in 2007 (51 percent) and 2009 (50 percent). Use the drop down menu to view the percentages in participating districts. Click Chart Options below the chart to explore average scores or make comparisons of your choice.

Beginning in 2009, results for charter schools are excluded from the TUDA results if they are not included in the school district’s Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) report to the U.S. Department of Education.
